Funded Dec 7, 2020I am in awe of your generosity! This book has greatly helped our department in beginning the library for our Heritage and IB program! Many of the books that us teachers choose, are meant to not only to enrich, but also to bring awareness and teach our students about acceptance of one's true identity.
This book., En El Pais Que Amamos is the autobiography of Diane Guerrero, a 14 year old girl, born from Colombian immigrant parents, who like my students, live in the Boston area. Her story is similar to many of my student's story - parents separated by a flawed immigration system. It is also a story of self-discovery and redemption: Diane Guerrero managed to overcome her challenges, on her own and with the help of family friends; she was admitted into the Boston Arts Academy and fulfilled her dream of pursuing acting, singing. Her redemption story is that she used her experiences to help other immigrants who were affected by the same hurdles her parents did. She was actively involved in the Obama administration, in creating a legal help line for those who are unable to pursue their right, due to language impediments. And many of my students simpathize with these stories and many others. I was able to create a curriculum that centered around the themes of this book - many students found here an opportunity to share their experiences and their feelings. This is an incredibly rewarding experience, not only for the students, but also for the teacher.
This donation has allowed for these books to reach our students and hopefully this will continue for many years to come!”
With gratitude,
