Using Osmo As A Hands-On Learning Tool

Funded Nov 23, 2020

Thank you so much for your generosity in funding my Donors Choose Project: Using Osmo As a Hands-On Learning Tool. Even with strict precautions and safety procedures during COVID-19, I'm able to utilize Osmo technology and resources to provide hands-on learning opportunities for my students. Below are the different ways it's being used in our Kindergarten classroom this year.

In the classroom, students are able to utilize the many Osmo games and applications provided to practice and reinforce content already introduced and learned. In particular, students have really enjoyed playing Pizza Company to practice following directions, working on mental math (addition, subtraction, beginning fractions), and picking up on nonverbal communication (facial and body language give clues as students lay down pizza toppings... get it wrong and a grumpy review, get it right and ecstatic customer).

This school year, our school abruptly switched to a fully virtual mode of instruction for a few weeks. During this time, I was able to rotate through and send the Osmo materials for students to use at home. The durable materials were able to be sanitized and easily cleaned before used again. Even in the midst of an increase of screen-time and digital content, parents and caregivers shared that Osmo was an interactive and engaging learning tool for their children. Many even admitted to adding it to their Christmas list this year!

As the year progresses and planning begins for next school year, I am excited to continue using Osmo as a hands-on learning tool in my classroom.”

With gratitude,
