Students will be growing their own plants and herbs and learning about ecology, the scientific method, and personal responsibility! My special education resource class will have our own indoor herb garden that students will have responsibility over the planting, watering, cultivating, and harvesting of their herbs that they will be able to take home to their families!
According to Case Western Reserve University, more than half of Cleveland residents live in a food desert, meaning they have limited access to high-quality and healthy food. My students and their families deserve access to the best food and we are going to be growing our own high quality food.
While students will get to enjoy growing and eventually consuming their herbs and plants, they will also engage in the scientific process of learning what variables affect plant growth. Students will conduct experiments to determine what independent variable can affect the growth of their plant. For example, students may choose to give one group of plants a cup of water daily while giving another group of plants a half cup of water a day. Students will then go through the scientific process to determine which planting method will yield the most herbs.
These plants will also enhance the overall classroom environment for my students. The plants will offer fragrant, relaxing scents that will help them focus on their work. Additionally, the lights that will be purchased off alternative lighting for my students instead of the harsh fluorescent lights that my school has. I have already purchased some plants, a watering can, and pots on my own to get the garden started. Can you chip in and help this garden going?
