Food insecurity and adverse childhood experiences are typical within our type of special education setting. Our school has a small student population and a hard-working, tight-knit group of educators, counselors, and administrators dedicated to cultivating greater peace every day and more hopeful futures for our students. Developing a sustainable food garden program at our school will help empower and educate our students for the struggles they face now, and hopefully provide joyful memories and useful knowledge for them to carry through their lives. Gardening addresses our need to provide fresh, healthy nutrition to feed our community literally, but also a gathering point for education, inspiration, and common cause that will feed the spirit of our community year after year. A local church has helped us build our garden beds and a local food access organization will visit us in the new year to help us plan a successful garden. Right now we just need a few tools and the actual seeds to start a gardening program that will grow along side our students for years to come.
