My students soak up every story that is read by a reading group or as a class read aloud. My students love reading! The engagement is high! In my class I have many students who are below benchmark or well below benchmark with their reading comprehension and accuracy. One way that they can improve this is individualized exposure to books. The books that I do have are second hand from other teachers. It is very kind of them to give me books, but many of them are pencil marked, part of a larger series, have pages missing, or their binding is falling apart. They have been well loved for many years. Another issue is that their stories are just not as engaging to my students as more current material would be, so they don’t pick them to read. This grant will help me revitalize my library (replacing damaged books, attaining complete book series, and adding new high interest stories) and provide students with exposure to many different genres of literature. Most of the books currently in my library are non-fiction or historical fiction. Many of my students ask me for fantasy books like Fablehaven or Harry Potter. Reading books they enjoy will provide intrinsic motivation to continue reading. I have witnessed a student, who previously refused to read, pick up a book that he found interest in, read hungrily, and ask for the rest of the series. This made me so happy. I want to pass on a love of literature to my students that will stay with them for the rest of their life. Reading is a fundamental skill that will always benefit them. Donating will help me provide a stronger foundation to foster this love.
