We use a Slides add-on called Pear Deck throughout the day so that students can interact with content in a variety of ways. For example, students respond to questions about reading through a function that allows them to type into slides. They also annotate text through using the drawing tools. I'm able to do quick checks for understanding using multiple choice quizzes and polls. I'm able to add audio to my slides to give my ESOL students and developing readers more access to the work. I'm able to see their responses in real-time, almost as if I'm walking around in the classroom to check their work. Students interacting with slides through Pear Deck allows me to address the various learning styles and strengths in the classroom, and also allows me to assess what my students are understanding and what areas they may need more work on. Some of my ESOL students are hesitant to participate in front of the whole class, but are still able to share their thinking through their Pear Deck work. All students learn best when engaged and "hand-on," and Pear Deck has proven to be effective for this purpose. My students have become proficient with this technology through a month-long free trial, and my hope is that I'll be able to continue to use this platform to engage my students throughout their virtual day. In addition, if we return to school for a hybrid model, Pear Deck will allow me to keep a safe distance from my students while still assessing their learning. Thank you so much for considering our project!
