With the addition of desks in our classroom, there are many ways to re-arrange and still keep our distance. Right now, with tables, there are little options and students don't enjoy the environment that the tables bring. The tables we have now work for social distancing, but only provide 12 spots for students. Desks are able to provide more room for movement, engaging with peers online and in class, holding Socratic discussions, all while providing a space for students to call their own. They also provide a better way to spread apart and create circles, squares, open spaces to talk. Students need their individual space that tables don't provide to support social-emotional learning. Students are still attached to each other and can invade each other's space. Desks separate them, while also letting them connect from all angles to each other. The format of tables makes it so students' backs are towards each other limiting the communication space. In order to have a successful year or more with hybrid learning, it is important that students are able to see each other and engage in communication.
