Our class can utilize this Farmer's Market stand for literacy and mathematics. We can teach colors through the fruit and vegetables on display. We can count the fruits and vegetables too and place numbered labels on them and have the children look for the numbered items. We can utilize each item for patterning. Literacy can be covered with labels on each item and by asking what each fruit or vegetable is in the stand. Children can exemplify a pre-literacy skill by matching objects to objects with the items included. We can ask them to point to a particular fruit and/ or vegetable to assess receptive knowledge. We can ask them what a particular fruit and/ or vegetable is too in order to observe whether the children can expressively label them. Most importantly, the children can play with everything and utilize their imaginations. We currently have a shopping cart, so they can take turns shopping and we can purchase a cash register to go along with the stand. At this age, preschoolers learn through play. It is a foundation of their learning and should always be included within the school day.
