I teach parents of Oakland Unified students. These parents come to my Family Literacy class to learn and practice English, as well as to learn how to help their children in school. My class has parents from all over the world, from places like Afghanistan, El Salvador, China, and Yemen. I would love the opportunity to have my higher-level, English-speaking students participate in a book group using Sandra Cisneros's classic book, "House on Mango Street". Many English-learning adults have to read children's literature because of their English levels. I think my students would love reading "House on Mango Street" because of its beautiful narrative and deep, thoughtful themes.
