I am a first-year teacher, 22 years old, straight out of college. I have 18 students and 5 receive Special Education services. Much of what I am asking for is for my students to use during carpet instruction, independent time, or even to cool or calm down when they become overstimulated in class. I aim to keep their hands and bodies busy so their minds are able to listen and understand their learning goals while completing their work. We cannot share materials, so I want to give each of my students a fidget or cool down box to go to when their frustration is at a peak. I plan on using the outdoor materials to have a stimulated recess environment that the students can use to have fun and take their mask break in a bubble space so they are staying safe. A big part of my classroom is regulation and what that means for 5- and 6-year-olds. I want to make sure they are learning about their feelings and emotions and that it's okay to feel the way they do. It's overwhelming to feel things, but it's harder to learn about how to show it. Having yoga and breathing exercises are safe and calm ways for students who are becoming anxious to relax and it's something they can then learn on their own to do.
