Literacy Practice for Exceptional Learners
Funded Nov 12, 2020Thank you for donating so my students could use the materials. The biggest hit is the reading lights which helps them follow along a while they read. The 4 colors of red, white, blue and green are loved by all of the students. The students have stated that the color overlays help the perceptual distortions that many of them have while they are reading. I had the students use the various colors and decide which one helps them the most. Most of the students have chosen green. Being able to place the colored overlay directly on their pointer finger is more efficient than the strips of cardboard color overlays because the students can point with their finger while they read so they do not loose their place.
The magnetic letters and personal whiteboards are helping with spelling and sentence development. During Covid, it is difficult to work in groups, but since each students has a personal whiteboard and magnetic letters, students can work in groups at a distance to create sentences and practice spelling. Students struggle with writing that is legible, and the letters solve that problem. I also, give students just a handful of letters and tell them to make as many words as possible with the student who makes the longest word the winner. To win though, using the word correctly in a sentence is required.
Thank you again for your thoughtfulness. These materials will be used in my classroom for many years. Looking forward to returning back to normal in the classroom to utilize strategies for grouping assignments with the materials.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Taylor
