Physical books in the hands of my virtual learners allows me to help them build a reading life, find stories that relate to them, and give them an opportunity to create an at-home library they can use to further their learning from home. All of my students are working virtually. Being out of school for so many months, these kids yearn for the classroom life. They have the desire to learn, the resilience to overcome the challenges, and the motivation to continue learning, but they also need the materials to do it. Our school has been sending supply bags home each month to try and get these students what they need to be successful, but as a first year teacher, I don't currently have the books to give them to support a balanced reading life or home learning experience. Reading apps on the iPad are not enough. Students need the physical books in hand to really get a sense of how the books work, what the book is about, and to be captivated fully by the book. I will be giving these books out to the students to use at home during virtual learning through their monthly supply bags that they pick up at the school or have delivered to their house. Each student will get 2 books to read to themselves, read with their families, browse the pictures, and continue learning with as much normalcy as possible.
