The 52 Hertz Whale of a Reads Project!!
Funded Oct 3, 2024The Zanetti Literacy Team launched our Zanetti Reads Project to their fellow colleagues/educators at a recent professional learning session. Our educators are especially excited about this year's project because of the text set we were able to purchase thanks to the generous funding of our Donors Choose project. In the attached photos you will see that the Literacy Team modeled reading aloud with our educators complete with a "cozy fire" and cookies. Grade level teams collaboratively planned how they will launch the novel and text set study in their classrooms which included projects for our whole school Zanetti Reads Project day on Wednesday, May 28th.
Some examples from our teachers include our music teacher teaching lessons about Evelyn Glenni, about a deaf girl who learned to play music; his lessons will be grounded in the book, Listen How Evelyn Glennie, A Deaf Girl Changed Percussion, one of the books purchased by this donation. Another group of educators will be teaching their students about whales using the informational text, Whales, that we ordered thanks to this project.
Our youngest students will have the opportunity to hear 52 A Tale of Loneliness which the author wrote based on the true story of the 52 hz whale while our middle school students will have an opportunity to read El Deafo, a graphic novel about a student that is hearing impaired.
We are grateful to the donors of this project so that all Zanetti students, Preschool through 8th grade have an opportunity to experience in the joy of reading while engaging in English Language Arts, science and disabilities awareness lessons with this set of books.”

Funded Dec 1, 2020Your donation enabled my students to each receive a new whiteboard and several black dry erase markers. These materials were instrumental for learning throughout the day but most notably for our morning and afternoon "Do Now" activities. The Do Now activities gave students an opportunity to engage in a short review activity around skills previously taught. This was especially important for math skills such as drawing ten frames or an open number line to add 12 and 7. In reading and writing, students practiced their spelling of the weekly pattern on their whiteboards.
My students received their new materials right before the winter holiday break. After the two-week recess in December, they arrived back on Zoom eager to learn with their new materials. Many of the students were holding up their new dry erase board and markers ready for the days' lessons! Since my students had been learning at home since September this was a great time to get updated materials.
These materials continued to be integral to student learning both through the hybrid learning in April as well as through the end of June when two-thirds of the class was in person. Since we still needed to be socially distant, the dry erase boards enabled students to demonstrate their thinking to me from home or their desk. Many thanks!”
