As a school counselor, one of the best ways I have to connect to students during this time is to create virtual story time, classroom lessons, and small psychoeducational groups. I use books to guide discussions as I read to them in their remote classrooms or as a video shared with them. Sharing stories has been the most effective way for me to engage my students and open up dialogue about the feelings they are having during COVID-19. I choose stories that represent the feelings they are experiencing during their remote learning. The students relate to the characters in the story to help them normalize the intense feelings they are experiencing. They begin to learn new ways of coping during hard situations by seeing how the characters navigate their problems.
