Urban Farming Comes
Funded Jan 21, 2025Thank you to all of you for your incredible support and generosity! We are so excited to continue our hydroponics study and also expand to aquaponics.
As the 5th graders move on from our school in June, they will share their expertise with the 4th graders. Then the cycle begins again in the Fall as the 4th graders become the new 5th graders. Thanks to your generosity, the vision to expand and find opportunities to learn more about food appreciation, nutrition, sustainability and environmental stewardship with each incoming group is coming to fruition!”
With gratitude,

Funded Sep 18, 2023Thank you for supporting our students and encouraging their interests in STEM. Prior to this project, they had never worked with circuits or marble runs before. When they started, they relied heavily on the instruction manuals and templates to help with their creations.
This year, they are throwing these manuals and templates to the wind and feel confident enough to try things on their own! Thanks to you, my students have begun taking more chances by making their own creations, troubleshooting, and persevering when they run into hiccups - the confidence and resilience that we need for future thinkers!”

Funded Oct 11, 2022Because of your generous donations, the students have now harvested fruit and vegetable parts to begin our own propagations! They carefully collected the seeds from fruits they have seen in their own homes and at supermarkets, while also introducing new things to each other. Some of our students were curious about gooseberries and dragonfruit, which led to some brave students trying these fruits for the first time ever!
Their excitement over all these tools to help them start their seeds and provide favorable living conditions were all over their faces, but also showed in their dedication and patience in extracting seeds for their plants. As we approach a February break, we will test the first round of plants and see if seedlings will form while we are gone for a week. If we are successful, we will talk about recreating as many of these conditions possible in their own homes and taking some seeds home. If we are not, we will be revisiting our original plans and tweaking them to try round 2!”

Funded Aug 7, 2022Thank you so much, again, for your generous donation! Since September, we have successfully grown a variety of heirloom lettuces, herbs, and cherry tomatoes. We have observed different growing rates and needs, while also practicing different ways to care for them.
It is a hot topic every morning to discuss the size, coloration, variety, and positioning of every plant. Are they leaning? Are they too close to the light? Do we have leaves that need pruning or removal? When can we begin to harvest?
Our plant monitors routinely check the plants every morning to make sure there is enough water, food, and light. If there are leaves to prune back or flowers to pollinate, they have been eager to do so. We even performed a demonstration on how to pollinate the tomato flowers for another class!
They love their Aerogarden plants dearly and are already thinking of what the next thing to grow will be. This will encourage more research and discussion on how to harvest seeds of different fruits and vegetables to begin using the "Grow Your Own" kit.
