Engaging my kindergarteners through the screen during remote learning has been a new and exciting challenge for us all this year. When in the classroom, I like to provide my young students with as many hands on experiences as possible so that they can learn by doing, and Pear Deck has proven to be a powerful tool to make remote instruction as engaging and interactive as possible.
I believe that children learn in all different ways, and Pear Deck provides students with multiple opportunities to interact with content and show what they know. For example, students can draw story characters or events, drag dots to selected responses (e.g. which word rhymes with duck?), fill in simple graphs in math, write short typed responses, practice letter formation, and so much more!
Instead of just listening to instruction and watching the screen, Pear Deck allows students to engage with the content and create something! Students can also learn from their mistakes as I provide feedback to them in real-time. Getting this information in the moment also allows me to see who would benefit from extra practice in small groups. This is particularly helpful for my students who are just beginning to learn to speak, read, and write in English!
My young students are already amazingly proficient with this technology through a one-month free trial subscription, which is about to end next week. If this project is funded, I will also be able to engage learners who are at home or socially-distanced in the classroom as we move into a hybrid model. Thank you so much for considering our project!!
