As an ESL teacher, not only do I help them with their language acquisition, I also help make sure they can access all areas of their curriculum. With our current pandemic related security precautions, I am also helping them access tech tools such as translators and Google Chrome extensions can build my students independence and confidence.
To adequately support my students in their English learning and academic work, I need to be able to connect with them where they are- and for many of my students, where they are is online. During this pandemic, I am supporting both in-person and online students, and it is critical that I have a laptop computer that can meet the demands I put on it. On a regular day, I am popping in and out of Virtual Classes, modifying and adapting assignments across 7 grade levels and the entire academic spectrum, and making individual or small group contact with my kids to meet their needs. The Chromebook I am currently working with struggles to complete the multitasking that supporting my kids demands. If I am helping a student work through their assignments, the lag time can make it even more difficult for my students to understand. Opening multiple screens and applications to support kids in different classes can also be a problem. Much of language acquisition relies on listening and talking, but if my students can hear or respond to me due to computer issues, they won’t be able to learn. An updated laptop with more processing power will help me assist my students without having to restart in the middle of a lesson, freeze as we are talking, or lose access to a lesson. Thank you for helping me help my students on their journeys to academic and English success!
