  • To Read, or Not To Read

    Funded May 4, 2023

I am continually amazed by the generosity of the donors. To have a class set of No Fear Shakespeare versions of "Hamlet" will really help out some of our struggling readers, not to mention our English Langauge Learners. I want students to find Shakespeare plays accessible and relatable. It's hard enough to get them to read anything, but it's really difficult when Shakespeare's language looks like a foreign language to them. No Fear Shakespeare has the original text side-by-side with a modern translation.

Thank you again for all that you do for educators like me!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Bargsley

  • I Like Books With Pictures

    Funded Apr 20, 2023

Thank you so much for the donations that helped fund new graphic novels for my students. We read silently for 10 minutes every day at the beginning of class. I teach on-level sophomores and many of them are reluctant readers. Graphic novels look a lot like comic books. Many students enjoy reading manga, some voraciously! These graphic novels are similar to manga, with pictures on every page. Since some students are more visual than others, these books are easier to navigate.

I am so grateful that I can make my classroom a more enriching place to learn, thanks to your help!”

  • Curiouser and Curiouser

    Funded Oct 10, 2022

Wow! Thank you so much for all of the materials to celebrate our reading of "Alice in Wonderland" later this school year! My team of English IV teachers is dedicated to making our students' senior year a fun one. They spent a good part of their high school years stuck at home during the pandemic. Since this is not a tested subject in Texas, we like to focus on learning and analysis, and then a party to celebrate the content. We did this last year and it was a big hit.

My heart is full, and I am overjoyed that you care so much about my students. Much love!”

  • Flocabulary Rocks!

    Funded Oct 10, 2022

Thank you so much for your donations so I can have access to all of the great resources offered by Flocabulary. Every Friday we start class by watching "The Week in Rap", a video that recaps the week in current events. Sometimes this is the only exposure my students will get to national and world events. As much as I would like them to understand the nuances of "Macbeth", I also would like them to be informed citizens.

I haven't even scratched the surface of all the other resources offered by this website, but as I write this on a bad weather day off from school--that is my plan! Thank you again!”

  • No Judge Zone Writing

    Funded Jul 31, 2022

Thank you so much for donating to my project! With your help, I was able to provide journals to all of my English IV students. These composition books are written in once a week during their entire senior year. I provide a topic, but they can usually write about whatever they want--a list of things to do, a recap of their weekend. There journals are a place to sort out feelings, rant, analyze relationships, or be creative. I still have my senior year journal; I encourage them to keep theirs.

You are amazing to support my students!”

    With gratitude,

  • Let's Print Again!

    Funded Jan 26, 2022

Thank you so much for helping to fund the new printer for my classroom. When my seniors write research papers in the fall, it is very helpful to have a hard copy of their rough draft so other students and I can proofread, make notes and help them edit and revise their papers. The students at my school have very limited access to printers; I'm sure many of their homes do not have that capability. Now, as soon as they finish their rough drafts, I can print out their papers and give immediate feedback. They're learning how real writers write--trial and error. :)”

  • A Novel Experience

    Funded Dec 8, 2021

I can't thank you enough for your donations. We now have a class set of novels--All-American Boys. We read aloud from them and have a discussion on Wednesdays and Thursdays. I teach seniors; you would think they would be too old for story time. However, you can hear a pin drop during that time every week. After quarantine, it seems like it's something they were craving.

I teach British literature, so reading from these novels is a nice break from Beowolf and Macbeth. The subject matter is relevant, and the characters in the book talk like they do.

You are my heroes. I'm able to provide so much enrichment to my students because of donors like you.”

  • Bless Us Everyone!

    Funded Oct 28, 2021

Thank you so much for your donations so that my seniors could read and experience the familiar story, A Christmas Carol. We had a great time remembering versions of this story we've seen in movies, cartoons and T.V. shows. While reading, we would often stop down to watch a movie version of a scene to see how the book translated into film. I believe their favorite version had to have been "The Muppet Christmas Carol"! It was very gratifying, when we read "Macbeth", when students noticed the three ghosts who gave prophecies to Macbeth were similar to the three ghosts who visited Scrooge.

    You're the best! Thanks again!”

  • Brains Need Fuel!

    Funded Sep 6, 2021

I am continually amazed by the generosity of donors. I constantly remind my students that there are people, who are complete strangers, who care so much about their education that they would donate to a project to help them succeed. It's a life lesson I hope they remember always.

You helped provide snacks to students who come to school hungry. These students feel sleepy and sluggish first thing in the morning because they haven't eaten. What a comfort for them to know that I had a cupboard full of snacks to help them revive, and make it through the day! You're angels straight from heaven!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Bargsley

  • Give Us Choices!

    Funded Aug 10, 2021

Thank you so much for your donations to my project for non-fiction books. All of my students started the year choosing and reading a non-fiction book. This has led to them to choosing a research topic for their senior English research paper, due in November. Thanks to you, my students have started researching interesting topics, like survivors of Nagasaki, the study of blood splatters in forensic science, and the mental health of teenagers since Covid. Because of their exposure to a variety of new books, my students have branched out from overused topics, like abortion or the legalization of marijuana.

We read silently at the beginning of at least one period a week. Reading anything is so beneficial to my students' vocabulary, awareness, comprehension, and fluency. Now they have more current books to choose from. I am forever grateful!”

At the beginning of the school year, my students chose books about race and diversity to read during asynchronous time at home or in school. I am so inspired by the important conversations they've been having. They are excited about reading, talking about the issues and deciding what can be done to improve the situation. Since they've heard about all of these great books about race and diversity, I would love for them to be able to check them out of my classroom library. Most of students aren't able to purchase books on their own.
