Fifth grade is the year students, as readers, go deeply into text, interpreting and analyzing stories. In our narrative reading unit, students think about their thinking while reading. As readers, they become more awake to their own lives and those of others through rich, engaging and diverse stories. When books resonate with students' own lives and experiences, their worlds expand. Struggling to find books to match, challenge and develop students as readers, my hope is to continue growing their love of reading through great books. These are a few of the responses my students shared when I asked, "What book character, scene, idea, or passage made you see your world differently? Something you decided, I want to carry this with me." The scene, “Lighting new that you didn’t hold a secret; the secret held you.
