I am seeking to collect books and start a library. Reading has served two purposes in my life, escape and opportunity. In some of my lowest times, reading provided an escape from real life circumstances.
Through books, I have left whatever immediate circumstances I was facing in reality to travel through sewers under streets of Brooklyn, through the forests of Ireland, and found myself unstuck in time. Reading expanded my knowledge of grammar and my vocabulary which in turn contributed to strengthening my English and reading scores on standardized tests.
My scores were near “perfect”, and my love for reading opened still more doors as I journeyed through the notorious college application and admission processes. When it came to my personal statement, I leaned on this love once more writing about the library as a haven. I can’t be certain it was reading that secured the victory, but ultimately, I was able to attend and graduate from one of the best post-secondary institutions our country has to offer--Go Blue!
I want this for my students. I just know how much experiencing the joy of rifling through the stacks, the magic a bookshelf can create will be pivotal in their personal educational journeys. To achieve this, we need books and lots of them. There is no serenity like that of walking into a silent, peaceful, and safe space to find an adventure that seems created just for you. Our school is in a community that faces many challenges, and while we don’t know how many books are available in each home, we want to make sure that there is no lack in what we offer to our students in school. Many of our students will have their perceptions broadened and experience their world grow beyond the limitations of Chicago.
