Technology in the classroom can be one of the most helpful tools in a teacher's toolbox. However, some technology can hurt instead of help. If students are not able to navigate the technology in the classroom it can become a barrier to learning instead of a tool. One of the most difficult barriers to overcome for students with special needs can hide in plain sight. The computer mouse. The computer mouse can be deceptively difficult for students with special needs to use for a variety of reasons including difficulties with fine motor skills, visual impairments, and difficulties with higher level thinking.
The touch screen technology and user friendly operating system used in iPads make them ideal for students with special needs and helps to overcome this barrier. Students are able to engage directly with classroom material through use of the touch screen. Throughout my years of teaching I have seen the same thing over and over. When given the same material students are noticeably more engaged (and significantly more excited) when it is presented on an iPad as opposed to a computer.
Providing iPads for our students as well as protective cases and Apple Care (just in case!) will help our unique learners overcome a significant barrier to accessing technology and provide them with an engaging and exciting way to interact with our classroom material.
