Right now, our library's "multicultural" book selections mainly focus on specific historical figures or events such as Jackie Robinson, Obama, or the underground railroad rather than telling a story with a social emotional theme like coping with change or showing empathy. Our students of color deserve to find books featuring characters like them that aren't always about specific historical or cultural themes like oppression, slavery, and dia de los muertos. Our students need to see themselves reflected in the stories they read, and our teachers should have a wider variety of diverse choices when picking read alouds for our students. Ideally, we would like two copies of most books - one that will be available for students, and one that only teachers can reserve to ensure availability when teachers want to use it for social emotional lesson planning. The $100 Teachers Pay Teachers gift card will help provide resources for teachers implementing lessons about social justice. Diversifying our library will be necessary when awakening our teachers to possible implicit bias in literary selection - we need culturally sensitive and diverse options for our teachers to choose from when encouraging them to think critically about the books they select, the themes those books portray, and the characters represented (or not represented) in those stories. Please help us take the next steps necessary in creating a more inclusive environment for all of our students. Thank you.
