I plan on using these materials to improve my guided reading instruction. My school district follows Jan Richardson's Next Steps to Guided Reading, and I want to follow her Word Study and Phonics Plan as well. I will provide my students with the opportunity to build and manipulate words using magnetic letters both in guided reading groups and in whole group time. Due to Covid-19, it is important that every student has their own magnetic letters to lower the spread of the virus. My students are reading at Levels A-D, which you would find in kindergarten, and are significantly struggling. Since I am a second grade teacher, I have been given plenty of books for my students to enjoy who are both on grade level and slightly below; however, my readers at the beginning levels have not been given the same opportunity to read in my classroom. I am looking to provide these students with quality books that meet their needs. Lastly, Jan Richardson suggests that students have a book bag filled with books on a weekly basis. As I want to encourage my students to take their books home to enjoy with their families, they need to be provided with sturdy bags that will protect the books for future uses. The book bags that I have added to my list will be a game changer in my classroom as we are currently using gallon size zip lock bags. With your help, I can personalize my guided reading groups to reflect my students' individual needs.
