Students reading 1.5+ years behind grade level have few options in reading materials because of the variance between subject matter and difficulty levels. The lack of reading sources has a domino effect leading to low performance and reduced participation. Getting fun and accessible books into students' hands has the potential to serve our native English speakers as well as English language learners. Settling down with an absorbing book is a luxury most students at age/grade-appropriate reading levels take for granted. I want my struggling readers to experience the joy that comes from being lost in a book, and there are no better authors than Mo Willems and Dav Pilkey to make reading fun! Timers will be used to help students record their reading minutes and the doodle pads will be used during daily writing lessons, all supporting literacy instruction.
