Since my students struggle to read at grade level, these books will not only help them read a classic piece of literature, but also help them have a sense of belonging as the other 9th graders read the original version of To Kill a Mockingbird. Graphic novels are a great way to help struggling readers strengthen vocabulary, build reading confidence and stamina, and develop a deeper appreciation of storytelling. They also allow struggling readers to have reading successes which sets them up for success with regular novels later on in the year.
