I am a speech-language pathologist who works with pre-k to 5th grade students in special education classes. The reinforcers that I asked for (the toy microphone and wind-up toys) will be used to motivate and reward pre-k students for using words to communicate and for following directions/participating. The printer toner is for me to be able to print in color and make speech/language therapy materials and picture cards to provide a means of communication for nonverbal students. Once I've printed the materials on cardstock, I have to laminate the picture cards and materials and use velcro for all the picture cards to create a communication book. Parents of students who are minimally verbal always ask me for ideas to practice language at home, especially with distance learning, and I thought that for these students, providing photo vocabulary cards (actions, emotions and common items) would be a very effective tool for parents to support language development at home. At first, lower functioning students often pick up the picture cards and try to bend them or put them in their mouth at first which is why the cards needs to be sturdy (use cardstock and laminate) so that the picture cards will not get destroyed. The microphone serves a dual purpose as it motivates students to make sounds/words in the microphone.
