Handwriting can be a daunting task for a five-year old student who is just starting school. Handwriting requires a lot of fine motor hand strength that many students, especially my exceptional education students, have not developed yet. Learning handwriting traditionally is difficult and discouraging for these students, and, because of this, they are often unable to build their letter recognition skills, which is an essential basic reading skill required for further development. By incorporating these dry erase alphabet cards into our every day reading lessons, my students will no longer become discouraged when it comes to handwriting. The dry erase boards will act as a tangible tool that enables students to have the independence to participate and learn in an interactive setting. As a result of this freedom, students will be more excited and eager to participate in activities involving these dry erase boards, therefore leading to a greater commitment within the classroom as well. Additionally, the use of this tool will act as a catalyst for advancing letter recognition among my students because the increased motivation coupled with the opportunity to practice in a more affable environment is curated to what they can improve on. Students will then be able to take what they have been practicing and use the experiences gained through the use of the dry erase boards as a means to acquire basic reading skills.
