My students represent a variety of countries and cultures. The students do not have access to many books with characters and traditions they can relate to, especially when the student first moves to America. Many children's elementary books reflect American culture, and my students are not able to relate to or draw on their schemata to comprehend the text. Imagine moving to a new country, with a different language, different culture, and trying to learn at school using information and book characters that you cannot relate to. These books will provide students with characters and traditions that are familiar to them, allowing them to build their English language skills by building on prior knowledge and experiences. Also, the nonfiction books will teach students about famous people from their cultures. The books will be used as read aloud books, read to self books, and read to each other books. The books will also be used to research and write about famous people from different cultures.
