I get the joy of working with struggling readers in Kinder, 1st, and 2nd grade. I use a systematic phonics based approach to improve their reading skills and want my students to have colorful decodable books, not just black and white passages, to practice these systematic reading skills. As we master a skill I want them to be able to take these decodable books home to read to their parents and grandparents and not worry if the books don't make it back to school. Working along side classroom teachers these decodable books and other materials will be placed in the snap pocket folders and put in their classroom binders for easy access for reread during the day and for easy carrying to and from school. My students struggle with reading now more than ever and any way we can make learning easier and practicing easier is so important. I want to give my students a variety or reading incentives and allow them to earn a book of their choice to take home. Our school is filled with good literature that is age appropriate, but the homes of our students are not. Our 5th grade after school running program gets students running up to 6 miles. I want to have items to encourage them along the way as we go from walking a mile to running a 10K. The cooling cloths will be given out each week to those who gave their best effort, and the pom poms will be used by all the classroom teachers as we RUN through our school before each big race. What an encouragement it will be for these runners to be cheered on by the whole school. These times of celebration of perseverance towards a hoped for goal are more important now than ever.
