Students have been faced with pandemic learning for nearly two years. My 5th graders’ last normal year was 2nd grade. Over the course of their 3rd, 4th, and now 5th grade years they have had to adjust to virtual learning, school closures, and quarantines. This has led to increased gaps in learning. In math, problems build on prior knowledge and these gaps make learning new concepts difficult. We use a variety of hands-on materials to help meet students where they are in their learning journey. We are currently using individual whiteboards in the classroom. However, they also require whiteboard markers, I am currently on my fourth set and counting. Students love these hands-on learning materials because they can easily write and erase their work as needed. Writing tablets will meet this need without the on-going cost of continued replacement of markers. They also have a fitted slot where the pens can be returned at the end of use. No more hunting down available markers and wasting precious learning time! The writing boards will also be used as a learning concepts gauge to determine how well students are grasping new material, and will also be used for quick answer prompts during class. In addition to these, I have also requested hands-on math manipulatives. These manipulatives will allow students to both visualize and physically work with new concepts being taught. The variety of learning tools requested will lead to a better understanding of new math concepts while also filling gaps students have missed during the pandemic. I teach three 5th grade math classes, each class has 16-18 students. My students have a wide variety of learning needs. I am striving to meet them where they are and help guide them toward successful grade level understanding.
