Our students love reading but sometimes struggle to find a comfortable, quiet place to read. 93% of the students on our campus are economically disadvantaged and 61% are English language learners. By providing flexible, comfortable seating in the library, I am able to create a safe space that is conducive to learning. The seating is easy for kids to carry outside for learning allowing students to be socially distant. Students look forward to coming to the library when it is welcoming and feel empowered because they are able to make choices about where they sit and what kind of seating meets their needs. Students can move the kid friendly furniture to find the place that works best for them. Students can move into pods that encourage group work. They can share their noticings and wonderings as they read when they can sit together. When they feel physically comfortable in the library, they will feel emotionally connected to the library and school. They will want to stay and read. Providing furniture that is a good fit, encourages students to use the library and read books. Reading books that reflect our students helps learners feel connected and seen. Creating a space where students want to linger, encourages them to read. They will love their new space.
