Struggling readers in upper elementary require engaging and explicit instruction. One challenge is to find resources that are age-appropriate and match their maturity level, yet are at their reading levels. Another obstacle is that many frustrated readers have developed avoidance strategies that sometimes manifest in maladaptive behaviors. I provide proactive support by setting clear routines and expectations. Using positive feedback and research based strategies, I strive to create a classroom that teaches and acknowledges good citizenship and respect.
