Communication skills come naturally to most of us, but not everybody. These materials will support those that have disorders in speech and language. The best materials are engaging and make the students forget that they are learning. That is, the materials are fun to use! Materials in speech-language therapy aim to inspire students to explore their interests and find new ones. The materials encourage students to find their voices and express themselves. I hope to use the materials in a welcoming setting that celebrates the students' interests, backgrounds, and quirks. Which sounds more fun to you, correcting grammar, or playing a board game with your friends? Lakeshore materials are often games that are language-based, challenging, and most of all, fun! A game like bingo inspires some lighthearted competition between peers, while allowing them to examine language concepts, like grammar. We all know the struggle of finding a balance between enjoyment and education, especially for middle schoolers. I believe these materials can help strike this balance. The materials target language concepts like: expression, comprehension, vocabulary, and grammar, all while using their language skills with peers.
