It came as a surprise when I heard the news. I was going to be the new reading teacher. I am excited, but to be honest, I feel unprepared. I'm starting with what I know - students need access to books. High-quality books...and lots of 'em! Becoming strong readers will help my students in all aspects of life. I serve a large "at-risk" population, and many haven't found the love of reading. Frankly, we are working against the clock when it comes to helping middle schoolers develop a love of reading. They still need to be read to. They need to have a good book in their hands...and then another one. They need to be voracious readers. They need to let books take them to all the places they might not ever be able to see. Unfortunately, COVID 19 has thrown some extra kinks our way. Students have to be careful about sharing materials, so I need even more books because of the decontamination period. I am teaching 10 classes - as I am teaching both online and virtual. My virtual students will be allowed to come to school and check out books,. And while they might not be face-to-face, they can still be part of our classroom community and listen to our stories read aloud! Please help me bring my students together...and build a community of readers.
