The books I choose to ask for will represent my diverse classroom in our reading and writing mentor texts. Students see our mentor texts and feel connected to them but often the characters in the books, the culture represented, and the story can leave some of my students wondering where they fit into the book. Each book on our list will be used to create a classroom of open-minded students who know they are each powerful, world-changers, who are loved for who they are and the talents they bring to the world. Children who see themselves in the books they read and the books that are valued in our classroom will become life-long readers.
