  • Teachers Pay Teachers

    Funded Mar 26, 2022

Thank you for your donations to my Teachers Pay Teachers Fund!

Having this fund allows me to access premade lesson plans, which are especially helpful when I need a substitute last minute. I've also used it to jumpstart our newspaper club this year. My students got individual press passes from Teachers Pay Teachers that they can use to get around campus without me having to write them an individual pass. I also downloaded a story outline from TPT that helped my students come up with interview questions.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Siebers

  • 2022-2023 School Year!

    Funded May 3, 2022

Thank you for your contributions this year!

My students had a lot of fun reviewing (and some of them learning for the first time) how to read an analog clock. They've grown up in the time of digital clocks and don't realize that there will be times when digital is not accessible, such as during timed tests.

I haven't had any students ask me what time it is since we did this assignment, and that is one less genre of question I have to answer/day, which I'm grateful for!

    Thanks again for your donation!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Siebers

  • If You Give a Middle-Schooler a Backpack

    Funded Mar 19, 2022

First off, thank you so much for helping to provide these wonderful backpacks. You would not believe how many of my students request high-quality bags at the beginning of the year. The three young ladies who helped me unbox the backpacks were shocked (in a good way) when they got the first bag out of the plastic. "These backpacks are nice!! It's even got a spot for my laptop!" My helpers then proceeded to discuss what they would put in each of the compartments as if they were walking away with a bag at that moment. We've had bags donated to our school in the past but, with no control over the donation, many were improperly sized for middle school students or had "undesirable" colors/patterns. I have a feeling these stylish gray backpacks will be flying off the shelves! Thank you for making this happen for my students!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Siebers

  • The Books U Give

    Funded Sep 13, 2020

Thank you again for supporting our 8th grade novel-study of "The Hate U Give" by Angie Thomas.

Teaching one section of in-person and one section of remote 8th grade general ed English this year has been a challenge. I was looking for a book that would be relevant and engaging up against the chaos of the 20-21 school year. I remembered the impact this book had on me, and I wanted to share it with my students. Within 48 hours, the project was funded, and I have you to thank for that.

We studied this book during the 4th quarter, and it was a learning experience for both myself and my students. For those not familiar with the plot, the main character Starr witnesses her friend's murder and spends the book finding the courage to speak up for his memory. Our essential question we answered this quarter was, "how can I use my voice to ignite social change?"

While I have never been in Starr's position, I find her story inspiring and relevant. At one point this quarter, MEA asked me to speak to the school board about a situation I care about. With my chaotic life, I originally turned the opportunity down. Then I thought, how can I teach students about using their voices when I don't use my own? I changed my mind and ended up speaking to the board about that situation, but also about teaching equality in schools. Like Starr, I learned that even though we don't "win", that doesn't mean we don't stop fighting for what is right.

Currently, there are groups trying to suppress teaching equity and equality in our schools. I've faced it here in Arizona, and it is also being discussed in Utah. To continue the work you started by donating to my project, you can sign the petition here http://chng.it/4B7GK95dJW to show your support for supporting multiculturalism and embracing equality in our schools.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Siebers

I would like to study social justice and equality with my 8th graders this year. The Hate U Give, by Angie Thomas, is an excellent YA novel published in 2017 about a young black girl in New York City whose close friend is killed by police. It has won multiple awards and had an impact on me as an adult. I can only imagine the positive impact it would have on middle school students. We will be reading articles, completing projects, and meeting in small groups to discuss these big ideas as we read the story.
