My students' ability to think for themselves is paramount to everything that I do in my classroom. The goal of this project is to springboard students' critical thinking through a novel study unit of "All American Boys" by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely. This unit is common core aligned, and reaches all 4 of the Anchor Standards for ELA: CCSS.ELA.8.RL, CCSS.ELA.8.RI, CCSS.ELA.8.L, CCSS.ELA.8.W, CCSS.ELA.8.SL.
I am working to build an ELA classroom environment in which all students have the tools and the classroom environment to read not only the texts in class, but also the world around them. I want my students to be able to encounter and analyze other perspectives, see themselves in their curriculum, and engage with real world issues that move beyond the classroom walls.
There is no question that many of my students' basic literacy skills are lagging behind, and I am striving to help close those gaps and meet students' academic needs. The technology added to this project are a part of this goal by making the classroom work more efficiently for me through wireless projecting, but also to help specific students who need manipulatives in their work or for small group work.
In addition to falling behind in literacy, students are also inundated with so much information, misinformation, and perspectives on the social upheaval resulting from the COVID 19 pandemic. I consistently notice how much they are craving a place to make sense of what is happening around them, especially when they are unable to engage in conversation with families. This novel study inherently engages students in this work, and the technology and supply needs added to this assignment will help me provide students with the structure and resources that they need to fully engage in difficult conversations that are meaningful to them.
