  • To Pass or Not to Pass: Black in America

    Funded Oct 7, 2024

By purchasing this wonderful novel for my classroom, I am able to share this essential story with my students. The book will be used next year as it was too late for me to incorporate it into this year's syllabus which I establish in June of the previous year.

Next year, the seniors who are in my elective class—Black Literature and Film—will begin the academic year with this novel, which will allow them a glimpse into the world of the characters in the novel, and more importantly, a great tool to then examine the film "Passing" with thematic connections. We will use these two texts to delve into important conversations focusing on race, colorism, what it means to pass in America, then and now.

We are grateful for this wonderful addition to our classroom library and the ability to use to engender intellectual examinations and converstions based on the themes the author explores in the novel.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Abramyan

  • Morrison the Great!

    Funded Nov 20, 2023

We are extremely grateful for your generosity in providing us with this wonderful, contemporary novel by an incomperable Black author.

The novel was read and discussed in my 12th grade elective course which focuses on Black literature and film, and the students were impressed by its relatability, accuracy, and lyricsim. We spent countless hours discussing the lasting impact of racism and colorism on the Black community both in the novel and in the world that we live in. Every student had something to share based on their own lived experience and engage in an intellectual conversation around important topics which continue to plague our modern society.

    Again, thank you!”

  • Meeting Basic Needs

    Funded Aug 21, 2024

By funding this project, you have allowed me to focus on other areas of need. Every year I have put my own money towards buying the basic needs for any classroom: loose leaf paper, pens, pencils, colored pencils, construction paper, printer paper, toner for the printer, books, lots and lots of books, cleaning supplies, tissues, lotion, snacks, Band Aid in all shades to represent every single student who crosses the threshold of my classroom door.

I am happy that I decided to submit this project which allowed me to focus on some other things I wanted to do like celebrate every single senior's birthday in my class by buying them a box of birthday cookies to celebtate them on their special day. I have also had a little more money—teachers get allocated a specific amount of money every year—to spend on supplies, or whatever it is that they decide they need in their room. This year, since the basics nees were met, I spent the allocated funds on more books for our classroom library. I think that every year I am going to submit a similar project because my students are still using most of the supplies I had requested!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Abramyan

  • Got Enough Books?

    Funded Oct 2, 2023

Thank you for your generosity! My students and I look forward to reading this wonderful novel to learn more about Nigeria, how domestic violence impacts this family, and the lessons that are to be gleaned from the pages of this novel.

You made it possible for us to engage in a world outside of our own, and we thank you for that.”

Model reading is such an invaluable activity teachers often engage in while in their classrooms. I am trying to re-create model reading by giving my students a chance to engage with the text and see how I go through it, annotate it, while they have access to their own copies of the scanned text. School book rooms have a limited number of copies of the text, and given our current circumstances, it will be challenging for many of my students to get to school to pick up materials. I can scan entire books using this document reader, and I can show my student in real time how I read and annotate the text for better understanding and deeper analysis.
