The students who attend the Life Skills program experience multiple impacting conditions/disabilities. These conditions impact their ability to engage with screens in general, but small screens specifically. Devices such as Chromebooks and laptops/computers are not generally accessible physically due to fine motor/hand and arm control. Having individually assigned iPad Pros would obliterate these impediments to access for all of the students that attend the Life Skills program. The great thing about iPads in general are the accessibility features that can be used. Eye gaze and switch use are some of the most exciting. Touch screen is also a huge feature for enabling use and interacting with educational content. The size of an iPad Pro is the other reason why these devices were chosen for this project. iPads can also be loaded with apps that can be used for communication, which means that each student can have the app augmented for their specific needs and opens up the ability to communicate their wants and needs with purpose. It also means that they can also have their communication understood by both peers and adults. Having an iPad Pro for each student crease access both in and out of school. While we are delivering educational services remotely, having a personal device that they can both visually and psychical access is the difference between engagement and disengagement.
