My classroom, which I took over from another teacher that moved away, does not have a rich library of books. This makes it very difficult for my students to gain access to good literature that can help them improve their reading skills and improve their vocabulary. The average age of the books in our school library is around 15 years and their condition is very poor, with many of the pages falling out. Research has proven that the more time a child spends reading, the more their ability to read will grow, leading to gains in all subject areas. It has also shown exposure and access to print-rich environments greatly increase the chances of children learning to love to read. Dr. Seuss once said, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” Despite the lack of books and the age or condition of the books in the school library, my students still enjoy reading them. I would love to give them access to new books I know they will both love reading and benefit from it academically. Therefore, the books on this list I’m hoping to get funded and added to our classroom library include picture and chapter books that are accessible to students of varying ability levels. These books will excite the students and help get them more interested in reading.
