Establishing a classroom community is critical. In our new landscape, community building is harder than ever. My school district has adopted a hybrid approach, which divides the roster into fourths. Some students come every day, while others come twice a week, and some are fully remote. With four cohorts, community building might seem impossible.
Luckily, my students have shown me that no barrier is impenetrable. Community building must remain the aim, but the path must be reshaped. With tools, such as a document camera and an interactive learning platform, we can create a welcoming digital environment.
In the morning, roomers, the students on-site, and zoomers, the students off-site, we'll be engaging in lessons simultaneously. Using the document camera, roomers can display their reasoning by manipulating letters and sound tiles for zoomers. This technique will foster a shared educational experience.
In the afternoon, students will be engaging in asynchronous learning. When students return home, they will hop on the website Seesaw. Seesaw is an easy-to-use, safe platform designed to facilitate a social hub for learning. The platform will be used to promote a culture of reading beyond the walls of the classrroom. The site will be used to host book clubs and book-based discussions. Children will be encouraged to share and reflect upon what they have read in a variety of modalities. Their responses can be videos, audio recordings, written pieces, and drawings. This enables students to respectfully and openly interact with their peers. With your help, my students will discover the joy of being in a community of readers!
