  • ¡Alfombra Comunitaria! - Community Carpet!

    All of the students were stoked when they first saw our new classroom rug. They clapped and cheered we now have a rug to sit on. Before the rug, they had the choice of sitting either on the floor or on little pillows. So, they were very excited to sit on their own square on the rug. They even had their names tapped on their spots, which they really appreciated.

    Not only do we appreciate the rug to do morning meeting at; but also for morning bin time where the students get to play and during center time. It helps facilitate a sense of community during our meetings, our socio-emotional discussions, and our playtime. I even have the opportunity to do small group lessons on the rug, where they are able to spread out and be comfortable while learning. On top of all of that, we also meditate on the rug, both sitting and lying down mediation - which is one of their favorite things.

    They love going to that space in the room and even call it our "alfombra de meditación" (Meditation rug). Muchas gracias from Room 113.”

There is currently no community carpet in the classroom and due to COVID last year, we weren't able to utilize such resource. The kindergarten team definitely saw some of the negative affects of not having a set physical space, like the carpet, where children can come together to express their ideas, narratives, and feelings. Students will be able to come together on this carpet to dialogue; share experiences and anecdotes; cooperative play; learn social skills like listening and giving feedback; and start the day with some mindfulness. This carpet will also make a great addition to our K2 classroom and will facilitate many activities with less disruption. The bilingual kindergarteners will definitely benefit from such large space to explore and learn.
