  • Help Me Communicate With My English Language Learners

    Funded Dec 2, 2020

This project was extremely helpful with certain students. Overall, I do not think the device was as good as I hoped it would be. I still needed to rely on my fluent speakers in the classroom to communicate well. I think this device would better suited to travel or short phrases. Not so much academic work.

We are not using them as much as I thought but they still worked better than not being able to communicate at all with my newcomers. I'm hoping this year to find better ways to communicate and reach my ELL students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Harness

  • Help Our Students Thrive!

    Funded Sep 10, 2020

Our students are overwhelmingly low income as well as struggling readers with non english speaking parents. In order to help with our low reading scores we are using programs such as Reading Plus to target and diagnose our students weaknesses. After we target their weaknesses we then have them complete lessons based around comprehension, vocabulary and visual tracking.

In order to accurately access our students they need headphones that allow them to listen to the videos and understand what is expected of them. Our old classroom set of headphones has seen many years of use and students were beginning to find several pairs that did not allow them to hear out of both sides or either at times.

Thanks to our donors at donors choose we were able to give our students more comfortable and modern headphones. These headphones are so popular that some students specifically ask to use them when completing projects rather than their own personal ear buds.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Harness

Our students struggle to make ends meet and with an emphasis on technology and digital learning it has become even harder for our students to thrive when faced with this pandemic and their daily struggles - some including homelessness. Students in our rural district are low income and many are esl - help our students thrive by allowing us to buy headphones for our ELA classroom and Nearpod for our virtual learners. Allowing my classroom to use Nearpod would increase motivation and gamify the learning experience. Our students struggle with grammar and writing as well as fluency of language. Not only would this purchase support our face to face students, many of which have no choice but to return to school due to their family situation and lack of resources, but it would also support our virtual learners and our English Language Learner population.
