This project is titled Anti-racism and Harmony. Anti-racism means actively working against racism and advocating for racial tolerance. Tolerance is respect, acceptance, and appreciation of the rich diversity of our world's cultures, our forms of expression, and ways of being human. Here, this is represented in our value of harmony: we celebrate our differences and work together to have peaceful relationships with everyone. This project library will not only educate about and celebrate our racial differences, but also our differences in ethnicity, culture, abilities, and more.
By creating an anti-racism and harmony library using textual lineage and social emotional learning, these students will be able to:
-Students will learn how to structure and integrate SEL themes and standards within instruction and school life
-Lessons will engage all learners through creating a safe & supportive environment
-Students will learn culturally relevant texts and resources
-Students will learn this is a space for all voices and diverse backgrounds
-Students will develop a sense of belonging, community and to honor diversity.
Scholastics Global Literacy Campaign describes textual lineage as “a reading and writing autobiography which shows that who you are is in part developed through the stories and information you’ve experienced.”
The Anti-Racism and Harmony Library and Social Emotional Learning is important because:
• Dedicating time to teach and promote SEL skills increases student attainment, attendance, and self-esteem
• Schools that promote SEL see decreases in out of school suspension and misconducts
• Our students need increased supports that they see as relevant, especially in response to recent traumas related to the pandemic and increased focus on racial injustice
