Our school has gone to a hybrid model. Their are two cohorts of students that were split alphabetically. One group will learn in person while the other group attends the same class virtually. In addition to these two groups, there is a third group that is always virtual and never comes in the building. It is my job to design lessons and experiences that reach all three groups at the same time. Unfortunately, as a math teacher I have no way to grade all of the fantastic digital work that my students submit. We are not collecting hard copies of work due to safety issues. This means that all I can do is provide written responses to help a student understand his or her mistakes. With math this is not practical. A student needs to see exactly where they went wrong and be provided concrete examples on how to correctly go about the problem solving process. Collaboration is key in a math classroom even when students may not be in the same room. I have been very creative in making this possible. I am utilizing programs that will allow students to work on their laptops and collaborate ideas with one another. At the same time, I will be able to observe each student's work in real time and provide feed back using the iPad and pencil. Again, this feedback is not possible unless I can physically annotate the equations on a screen. My students deserve more than busy work or verbal written responses that they have had a hard time grasping. They deserve an enriching experience where their needs are met and unfortunately at this time my hands are tied to only verbal written responses. Please help me have a more meaningful interaction with all of my students.
