Thank you SO much for your help in making this engaging, hands-on science lesson happen. My students were elated to discover that they would be using Oreos to discuss the moon's phases. Even through Zoom, my students were highly motivated to create their moons! We took Zoom screenshots celebrating their projects. Days after, my students would comment on what phase the moon was in the night before. As we get ready to wrap up our year, we have written reflection paragraphs about all of the fun we've had in first grade. Someone said, "remember when we made the moon using OREOS?" Everyone nodded enthusiastically. It was truly such a special experience that my students were able to have, thanks to you! Thank you for making a Zoom science lesson fun and memorable.

In first grade, students use a variety of tools to solve math problems as they learn that problems can be solved in many ways. As students are learning from home, they are limited by the manipulatives they have available to them. This project would change their Distance Learning experience tremendously as each student would receive their own set of Base 10 blocks, Rekenreks, and Unifix cubes to use in math. Base 10 blocks provide opportunities for students to learn place value and build number sense, and Rekenreks and Unifix cubes allow students to model math stories and compare numbers. Having these tools at home with them would allow students to explore different methods of solving using a hands-on approach to math. These tools would increase student engagement and make math lessons and concepts come to life! A variety of manipulatives would also give students more avenues for sharing their thinking and strategies with their peers. Using models to explain concepts is a fundamental skill first graders build with math manipulatives. Help my teaching team deliver these tools to 100 first grade mathematicians who would become empowered with the hands-on learning discoveries they provide!
