There are many benefits to speaking more than one language. Being multilingual gives students a better understanding of how language works. There are various studies on how being multilingual leads to less mental decline in old age. Students will have greater cognitive ability which will make them more creative problem solvers. Most importantly, being multilingual will my students a better perceptive understanding of the world. I teach 1st grade bilingual students. My classes are composed of English language learners, students with dyslexia, gifted students, and students with special needs. At our Title I school, the vast majority of my students come from low-income households. I aim to provide them with a nurturing environment that encourages them to grow into productive and kind human beings.
