My goal is to preserve fun at lunch and recess--while following C.D.C. social-distancing and district educational guidelines--by turning it into Picnic Time. We are lucky to have a schoolyard with a brand new cheery mural and ample space on the first floor to use in inclement weather. We have books on health and wellness topics to read aloud to small classroom groups while they are eating, thus adhering to a new district mandate that has turned lunch into an instructional period. We are just missing a place to sit or stand and a place to put the food--two sections of exercise floor mat for each child that will help them, especially those in pre-Kindergarten through grade 2, understand and follow the concept of social distancing. After the picnic, our students will have a recess like no other with these mats! The food mats will be stowed away in personal giant baggies. The sitting mats will become defined personal spaces for dance parties, yoga, epic Simon Says and other socially-distant games. Picnic Time will play an important beginning step in the emotional healing of our students.
