The money from this project would be used to purchase a soprano recorder for each student in grades 3-5 in our school. In these grades, students learn the basics of music theory, note-reading, performance techniques, and musical styles. With the use of these newly acquired recorders, our students will not only learn about these concepts as passive observers of the arts, but as performers and creators of artistic content. While we are engaged in distance learning, students will be using these recorders in weekly classes on Zoom, learning to read music, play different notes and fingerings on their instruments, and perform melody and harmony parts alone and in groups in synchronous online classroom sessions. Ultimately, these students will come away from this experience being able to read music independently. At the end of their time with me, the aim is for these students to be able to find new music and have the skills and knowledge to learn to play on their own without assistance.
