Laminator for English Development Resources
Funded Oct 12, 2023On behalf of my students and myself thank you for your generous donations! Without your support we would not be able to use sentence strips daily in small groups to work on English writing. In the picture, you can see some of the students eagerly writing and using the strips and whiteboard markers you funded.
In addition, thank you for the laminator and sheets which I have been able to put to good use. For example, I have created some emotional regulation half sheets with sentence frames and word banks for students to use in small group. They have been able to use these for speaking, writing and reading in English. I think they like it because every day at the start of group they say, "I want to say how I feel".
Hope you all had a great holiday season and again thank you for making these experiences possible for multilingual students in our community.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Mariano

Funded Jan 19, 2023Thank you again for your generosity in order to make the reading time in my classroom possible with these pieces of literature and providing students with tea to drink simultaneously.
In my newcomer English classroom, many of my students have taken to the Magic School bus series even though they are in middle school. This has been sweet to see that they are still children at heart and enjoy the elementary school style books. This is impactful because they are all just beginning their reading journey in English and therefore the vocabulary in these books are a perfect fit for independent reading books. Without your donation my students would not have been exposed to these books and would have not been able to develop their love of this literature. In addition, the students all enjoyed drinking tea during independent reading time as it set the mood for our reading cafe.”

Winter Supplies for Emerging Bilingual Students
Funded Nov 30, 2022I am so excited to share with you my students have all received their hats, scarves and mittens thanks to your generous donations! The day before winter vacation I gave each student the opportunity to choose the color winter gear they wanted. Before having them choose their colors, I informed them that these were donated from you and that they were gifts for them to keep. At first, some students were confused that strangers had spent their money to buy them these gifts. But after some discussion about one of our class expectations of kindness, they made connections to your generosity to the kindness we all strive for in the classroom and expressed gratitude. All of them smiled when they realized they were going to be able to take them home to have! Then, a few students started modeling and trying on their new accessories and soon the whole class were styling their new hats and scarves.
On behalf of our class, I want to express my sincere gratitude for your donation which have allowed these 12 children to have winter gear to keep them warm for their first winter in DC!!!”

Funded Aug 31, 2020Thank you so much for your generous donations to my 1st grade ESL class this fall! With your donations I was able to not only purchase the books for our social justice unit but also blue light glasses for 20 students as well. The first two pictures are student work from our social justice unit following our reading of the book "The Youngest Marcher" which YOU funded! Throughout the unit students engaged in discussions, writing and reading around what it means to have integrity and work for positive change. The books you funded allowed me to provide my students with culturally relevant literature which also allowed students to be able read from diverse authors.
My students are I are forever grateful for the blue light glasses as well. Starring at a zoom screen all day is certainly taking a toll on their eyes. But, they think it is so cool we all have matching ones; which encourages them to wear these glasses and helps their eyes at the same time!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Mariano
Blue Light Glasses
Funded Sep 21, 2020Thank you so much for your generosity in order to supply my students with all 19 of my students (and one sibling) Blue-light glasses this year!
I made contactless deliveries to their houses with the glasses and a book for each student and they were all so excited. The day after I gave them the glasses they all wore them and couldn't believe they all matched through the screen. Their parents are also grateful for the donation and many of them expressed they have noticed less complaining of eyes hurting from their students. Everyday the students were these "cool" as they say glasses and match with their friends while also helping their eyes while being on the screen 6 hours a day all thanks to your generosity.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Mariano
